What can feminist comparative analysis reveal of the transformative potential of cities and local adaptations of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)? This talk explores the synergies between SDG 5 and SDG 11 in addressing the relationship between urbanization and deeply gendered economic, social, environmental and emotional insecurities. It interrogates how urban policies that incorporate (or not) the SDGs mediate gender relations and women’s placemaking practices, and how the latter are reconstituted and transformed in the context of urbanization in the global South.
