Tangible and intangible heritage in Southwest China is more and more related to politicized urban discourses that are delivered in order to shape new representations of local megacities, affecting also the spatial dynamics in the urban-rural fringes that surround the most densely populated areas.
Looking at the processes that promote the reconstruction of local cultural identities in virtue of their potential in matters of reterritorialization and place branding, this paper analyses the discursive trajectories that are changing the perception of Chongqing city, broadening its influence at the provincial level also as a cultural hub. In particular, the practices of heritage manipulation and selective memory are investigated to shed light on the power geometries that articulate the phenomenon, pointing out how the quest for cultural differentiation plays a role in the process of urban planning that affects the entire Sichuan Basin network of heritage discourses.
