The Millennium Observatory (MO) is a network coordinated by the Municipality of Belo Horizonte (MBH) that aggregates research groups from public and private academic institutions in order to monitor the city situation in relation to the global goals established by the United Nations. The initiative began in 2005 with the participation of the municipality on a pilot project for local monitoring of the Millennium Development Goals agenda and is now continuing with the new Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) agenda. Since 2018, the work developed by the MO has been based on the data selection and systematization for the local monitoring of the SDG agenda. Currently, 162 local indicators are available for evaluating the municipality's performance in the 17 SDGs, with several indicators disaggregated by relevant social markers, such as sex and race/skin color, and by intra-urban territorial units. The database of monitored indicators, available on the open data platform, is updated annually and the results can be viewed on an interactive panel on the MBH's web portal (observatoriodomilenio.pbh.gov.br). The MO’s work plan also contemplates the biannual publication of a local report on the monitoring of indicators. The first report was published in 2020 with data organized by the MBH and analyses conducted by specialists from the MO’s partner institutions. Due to the institutional arrangement created and the permanence of its actions, the MO’s initiative can be considered a differentiated experience in the context of municipal public management in Brazil. From the point of view of the participating institutions, it generates opportunities for advocacy on topics and policies of interest, and, above all, mutual learning about the functioning of local public policies and the possibilities of improving them, thus contributing to the construction of a healthier, equitable, fair, and sustainable city.
