Magnfríður JÚLÍUSDÓTTIR, Deparment of Geography and Tourism Studies, University of Iceland, Iceland
In 1992 I began graduate studies in geography abroad, later to return home to succeed to the academic postion of my retiring feminist geography teacher. Both of us have been lone feminist geographers in our local context, nurtured by vibrancy of academic feminist writing on a global scale. In this session I want to reflect on similarities and differences in our research interests and „activist edge“, analysed in the context of social and theoretical change. We shared an interest in global inequalites and women´s geographies/gender relations in the South, especially in Africa south of the Sahara. I will elaborate on the impact of feminist academic discussion on the recognition of difference, positonality and postcolonialism from the 1990s in the context of both my southern and northern geographical research context. The intersections of various differences and inequalities at both the local and global scale, and their connectivity, still entails interesting research topics and theoretical discussions for feminist geographers around the world.
