The GeoNight is an initiative proposed for the first time by the CNFG (French National Geographical Committee) at a National scale in 2017. From 2018 onwards, the initiative has expanded internationally, first in Europe, thanks to EUGEO, and then even beyond, gaining IGU support, coming to include events from 33 world countries from all continents in 2021. The GeoNight website (www.geonight.net) recorded, for the 2021 edition, connections from 96 world countries and from 1,023 cities. In 2022 the GeoNight is scheduled for 1 April. The organization of this event gave the opportunity to reflect on a wide range of issues related to geography and the relationship of this discipline with society and public opinion. The methods of dissemination of the event, the topics covered, the different event formats, the perception of Geography by the public, the possible specificities of the individual countries, the organizational model, the role of geographical societies, the “covid effect”, the possible improvements for the future: all these themes are at the focus of this intervention. Data and information deriving from participation questionnaires disseminated in some countries during the GeoNight will also be discussed.
