India’s rich heritage is abundantly reflected in the form of numerous temples, palace, monuments, forts etc. which have contributed in the growth of tourism to and within a country. Tourism coined its importance as a contributor in economic development particularly in remote and backward areas, rural areas has been well recognised the world over and popularising the rural tourism. In Uttar Pradesh, Prayagraj district has a high potential for tourism development and offers different types of tourism i.e., religious, historical, and educational. In respect of the tourist sites in and around Prayagraj district, it is observed that they are facing challenges primarily related to the creation, operation and maintenance of the various infrastructural as well as service assets. Present study aims to explore potentials tourism sites near and around Prayagraj district and to relate rural tourism with social, cultural and economic element of rural areas for enhancing overall tourist experiences. The study is mainly based on primary sources of data which have been collected through field survey. On the basis of Purposive random sampling total 150 respondents from 5 selected tourist sites have been surveyed with the help of questionnaire interview during August-November 2021. Results shows that Prayagraj district act as an engine for harnessing the tourism potential and provide employment opportunities by linking tourist destinations and make available basic amenities and facilities. The study concludes that an enhanced level of local participation and provision of specialised market in the tourism planning process is required.
