In Italy, the number of immigrant students has grown considerably in the early 21st century. After a long period as an emigration territory, Italy has progressively changed into a country of immigration, reaching about 5,1 million immigrants on 1st January 2021, according to ISTAT (Italian National Institute of Statistics). Nowadays immigration is characterized by a stable presence of long-standing residents, prevalently made up of families with children. Indeed, in the Italian education system (preschool, primary school, lower secondary school, upper secondary school) there were 876.802 foreign students (school year 2019-2020) (MIUR, 2021). It this context, the biographical experiences are different and include new arrived children, migrant children, children with an immigrant background of second or third generation (Riccardi et ali, 2019). Therefore, the school is an important place where the relations are constructed. The school system and foreign students produce and reproduce relations that are intersecting the space.
The e-poster analyses the students with an immigrant background within the context of the old and new social challenges, such as the pandemic emergency or the conflicts between native family traditions and Italian lifestyle. The poster divided in two parts. The first one illustrates the increase of the number of foreign students in the Italian regions, provinces and cities, compared to natives (MIUR, 2021; Ongini, 2021). Such a premise is necessary in order to understand the Italian situation. The second part is dedicated to illustrate empirical experiences. The Italian approach is characterized by contradictory relationship, between policy, teaching strategies and educational experiences and that influence and change the school space and place.
