Informal Economy and Urban Challenges in India
The Indian economy has witnessed unprecedented growth, and as an outcome, Indian cities have spread out horizontally and vertically manifolds. It has ignited an urban crisis. This crisis is characterised by the unequal distribution of urban amenities and infrastructure and by contrasting social divisions reflected by posh enclaves and urban slums. There are many wake-up calls to authorities to address these challenges for more inclusive and future-oriented urban planning. This research paper attempts to explain India's urban crisis at present. It also focuses on analysing the structure of urban informality in India. Informality is mostly considered synonymous with poverty and the absence of regulatory frameworks by state; it is often regarded as illegitimate. This research paper attempts to inquire about India’s quest for inclusive and just urban development.
This research paper is based on secondary data mainly from the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, Government of India and available literary sources. This paper is concerned with analysing the interrelationship between urban informality and urban problems in the Indian scenario. It attempts to examine the challenges faced in the implementation of various government policies and schemes with appropriate suggestions to improve the efficiency of their execution.
