In Algeria, people with disabilities often struggle with the inaccessibility of cities. These problems related to accessibility and the physical barriers of the urban environment have a negative impact on eveyday activities since they prevent people with disabilities from carrying out their daily tasks, moving freely in attractive and desirable places.
This paper aims to examine the correlation between the accessibility and the attractiveness of public spaces for people with disabilities. It analyzes the factors that influence their choices of itineraries in public spaces, and the impact spatial and social dimensions of the urban environment may have on their daily movements.
The paper first starts a qualitative analysis with an in-situ survey conducted in downtown Algiers. It investigates how people with disabilities use public spaces through an analysis using commented walks and interviews with a group of disabled people. The second part of the paper focuses on the description of the case of study with space syntax techniques by using the DepthmapX software.
This analysis allows us to ascertain the degree of accessibility of Algiers’s public space, as well as the parameters influencing the mobility of people with a physical disability. It reveals that people with disabilities do not have an optimal choice of travel, and that they move according to the physical accessibility of the space to the detriment of the attractiveness and usefulness of the space, which impacts their daily well-being.
