Santa Catarina is a relatively more industrialized state than the national average, as, with 3.28% of the Brazilian population in its territory and accounting for just over 4% of GDP, it has a manufacturing industry responsible for generating more than 5 % of the product and almost 8% of industrial employment in Brazil. Internally, an indication of the social importance of the industry is given by the expressive participation in the generation of formal jobs: almost 30% of formal jobs in the State are in industry, against a similar percentage of 16% for Brazil. The industrial structure of Santa Catarina has a strong presence of branches of the traditional industry (food, textiles, wood) of low technological intensity (53%), while the branches considered of medium-high to high technological intensity participate with approximately ¼ of the product. industrial sector of the State, with emphasis on the sectors of electrical equipment-materials, mechanical machinery-equipment and transport material. Of this set, the industry considered to be of high technological intensity is still modest in the state, with a participation of around 3% of the total. During the first decade of the 2000s, the hypothesis of a relative deindustrialization in the Santa Catarina economy can be raised, due to the tendency of the transformation industry to lose participation in the formation of the state product, falling to less than ¼, while, on the other hand, , the participation of industrial services of public utility (electricity, gas, etc.) and commerce grew. It is like the expressive growth of employment, which in this period was due to the large population growth of the coastal regions of the State associated with the adhesion to the privileged tax regime. As for the level of densification of industrial activity, there is a tendency in part of Santa Catarina to become a mere “maquiladora” or assembler of products from components imported from abroad or from other states.
