Inner peripheries are common throughout Europe, irrespective of a country’s level of development (Servillo et al. 2016; ESPON 2017). The peripheral nature of these areas is affected primarily by the limited extent of their relations with the economic environment (Copus et al 2017). The current COVID-19 pandemic has multi-faceted economic and social consequences (Churski et al 2021). Therefore, it is crucial to identify the challenges it brings to the socio-economic development in inner peripheries, and evaluate their sensitivity and resilience to the consequences of the SARS-CoV-2 crisis, which will enable to design recommendations for the changes in development policy interventions. The paper presents the results of the first stage of the research project aiming to identify the regularities of changes to the socio-economic development in selected inner peripheries in Poland during the pandemic. The aim of the paper is to delimit and classify inner peripheries based on a wide range of indicators of quality of life, economic performance and communication accessibility. Functional urban areas (FUA) delimited based on migration, commuting and transport accessibility served as spatial units of analysis. The purposeful choice of indicators was followed by multivariate exploratory statistical analysis. The results point at a wide diversity of the characters of peripherality in various geographic settings. It points to the utility of case study approaches and place-sensitive politics in challenging development issues during the current pandemic crisis. This study was carried out as part of the TIPERICO research project (www.tiperico.web.amu.edu.pl) funded by the National Science Center in Poland (No. UMO-2020/37/B/HS4/01034): Trajectories and challenges of internal periphery development in new conditions of coherence post SARS-CoV-2.
