The communication will stress the significance of the critical study of geography’s history and philosophy. Attention will be paid to the history of geography and to the history of biographical inquiry and to evident gaps in geography’s biographical history (the under-representation of women for instance). The chapter will identify recent themes in the history and philosophy of geography and consider inter alia the tensions between international perspectives and national approaches to geography’s history; the role of theory; the links between geography and the history of science. The final section will consider future possibilities (and necessities) including geography’s ‘imperial legacy’; environmental history; public geographies; and the under-representation of women.
