Issues of local and regional development in geographical research have primarily an applied dimension. The topics of scientific studies focus on the diagnosis of spatial and socio-economic structure, planning and development strategies at different scales. The areas of reference are territorial units - from small settlements, to municipalities, to regions and even whole countries. Yet, the perception and attitudes towards local development may be different in different countries. The aim of this chapter is to present contemporary methods and research achievements in the field of local and regional development. To learn the role of both local and global mechanisms and processes in generating social and economic inequality within and between places, and the ways to decrease gaps of spatial unevenness. They are discussed using concrete examples of studies in selected countries and regions.
