The theme of the power of street naming is also linked to the 'official' location of human beings through the assignment of an address.
The power of addresses has economic aspects related to production, trade and related movements that must be certain and rapid; political aspects associated with the control of productive forces through an institutionalised system of exact location; and civic and social aspects, related to the full enjoyment of citizenship rights such as health, education and work. In the societies in which they are used, addresses reveal their importance both as a spatial control device and as a tool for the enjoyment of citizenship rights.
In Italy, almost all inhabitants of urban centres have an address, consisting of a street and a house number. In the countryside, on the other hand, a large number of citizens do not have this model of home address at all and are found on the basis of a hybrid model of 'address by location'. What are the reasons for this situation? What are the consequences for citizens and institutions?
In addition to these practical aspects, the paper also discusses technical and theoretical aspects with a strong geographical impact. It is well known in the literature that odonyms are a subset of toponyms that exclusively considers the name of traffic routes (roads). In cartography, toponyms generally correspond to polygonal elements containing odonyms, that correspond to linear elements. The 'locational address' introduces distortions to the cartographic representation model, since it does not correspond to a polygon but to a point, which may seem exact but is in fact only 'circumstantial', given the impossibility of delimiting the area or of highlighting the roads.
