Unlike conventional tourism that takes place within countries worldwide, tourism in border areas faces different asymmetries that influence its development. The reality can be very complex both at the border and at the cross-border level. It is for this reason that this study wants to figure out how the phenomenon works in the territory and to debate its characteristics. The research explores the theoretical backgrounds of the scientific literature of North America and Europe and takes as an empirical case study the Andean border of Ecuador and Colombia located at 2,900 meters above sea level. As main findings, it is analyzed that cross-border tourism responds to: 1) the delimitation of the tourist destination, 2) the assesment of the cultural landscape, 3) the behavior of tourism supply and demand, and 4) binational cooperation.
