This study aims to ascertain to what extent and in what way the gender perspective is present and has influenced the tourism research in recent years. Tourism, like any social phenomenon, is not neutral but guided by the principles of a capitalist, patriarchal and colonialist system. It is part of the European Commission Gender Equality Strategy for 2020-2025 to break the many structural barriers and ensure that gender dimension in research and innovation content becomes a standard requirement, contributing to SDG 5. The objective was to find out how the gender approach was present in tourism publications in recent years and notice which topics have been more common under this approach. For this, a systematic review methodology of the literature was conducted over the WoS and Scopus databases. The search terms were “touris*” and “gender”, but to ensure a complete overview of the literature “gender” was complemented by the terms “wom$n” and “femins*” as well. The mentioned words were searched within Article title, Keywords and/or Abstract. Only publications that followed these criteria were selected: a) type: article or review article; b) language: English, Portuguese, French or Spanish; c) period: published between 2016 and 2021. Duplicated articles or papers that did not significantly incorporate a gender approach were excluded. Afterwards, a coding of the thematic area was applied to each article individually and a quantitative analysis was done. The results indicate that the most of literature that include a gender perspective in tourist studies focus on the ‘feminisation of tourism work’, in the ‘gendered travellers’ and ‘sex tourism’. This research shows that the gender perspective in tourism research, despite having been on the rise, remain with a gap in many areas to be explored and deepened. This review shows that tourism and gender studies do not address all areas of study and a gender integration can be further explored holistically by tourism studies.
