The influence of the COVID-19 pandemic on tourism is great at any spatial scale and for every stakeholder all around the Globe. Although the European idea of innovative, sustainable, and inclusive tourism spatial planning has been developing long before the latest pandemic, this long-lasting pandemic could affect fastening the development of the mentioned idea.
Tourism spatial planning is facing a lot of highly heterogeneous challenges. Before the pandemic, these ranged from the need to promote tourism activity in less attractive tourism destinations to mitigating the negative externalities of overtourism in the attractive ones. These tourism destinations could be entire countries, but also parts of the cities or protected areas such as national parks. Nowadays, more than ever before, there is evidence of demand and supply for more sustainable and “responsible” tourism. Maybe that changes will strength the postmodern turn in tourism flows, while individualism and authenticity are one of the main determinants of contemporary tourists moving away to alternative places.
The paper presents the outcome of the Erasmus+ Programme project “SPOT. Sustainable Spatial Planning of Tourism Destinations” regarding tourism governance development in five different countries. This project engaged scientific representatives of geography, spatial planning, architecture, economics, management and tourism sciences from six institutions and five countries: Italy, Norway, Poland, Portugal and Turkey.
The main trends and challenges of tourism spatial planning in the above mentioned researched countries will be presented, both for the pre-COVID-19 pandemic period and nowadays, when tourism is struggling to straighten its curves upwards.
