In the Ruralization project a focus has been on new entrants into farming (NE) identified as actors of generation renewal. They are considered potentially creators of innovation for the agro-ecological transition (Morel & Léger, 2016), in developing environmentally friendly practices as well as in promoting local food networks (Brunori et al, 2011).
Several NE profiles, in terms of background, origins, projects and expectations, are reported in the literature (Murthag et al 2020), highlighting a different interpretation of NE in the European countries and confirming the difficulties to clearly define them, as have been pointed out by EIP-AGRI (2016).
The main problems faced by NE, highlighted in the literature, are related to the access to the land and training; the openness and the integration into rural communities, the compatibility with the existing farmers, the absence of policies addressed specifically to them (Kinsella et al, 2020).
In this framework the paper will present the results of a comparative analysis on 10 case studies on new entrants into agriculture executed by the partners of the Ruralization project in 2021 in 8 European countries (Sivini et al, 2021). The discussion will be on the barrier faced and on their resource mobilisation capacity, style of farming, policies and institutional supports and on the impact and the perspectives of the practices analysed in fostering rural regeneration.
