Although the motivation to participate in water-based tourism or recreation has been the frequent focus of research, there are very few studies that examine motivation to visit water-based resorts and spas of local importance. This study will focus on visits of tourists and recreationists to one of the newest local water-based resorts in Romania. Situated about 80 kilometers north-east of Cluj, the second-largest city after the capital, Figa Baths opened in 2010 and was built using European funds. Since its inauguration, the number of visitors has increased year after year. This study seeks to understand;
What motivates tourists and recreationists to visit water-based resorts?
Why have these tourists and recreationists chosen Figa Baths for their tourism or leisure-time destination?
Whether there is any relationship between socio-demographic and travel characteristics of visitors and their motivation to visit.To gather data, a questionnaire was administered during the summer of 2019 to visitors of the water-based resort with the help of student assistants. At the end of the day, some 200 usable questionnaires were collected. The data were then processed using SPSS and the findings were discussed in relation to studies available in the literature. Finally, limitations of the study were acknowledged, and theoretical and managerial implications were suggested.
