La Plana Baixa is a region of Castellón (Valencian Community, Spain) located in the Western Mediterranean basin that has undergone an intense anthropic transformation since the 1980s with the construction of a seaport and numerous breakwaters. This has caused a serious denaturation of the coastal area, in addition to recessions that exceed 200 meters between 1956 and the present. The anthropic pressure caused by the construction of promenades and buildings on the seafront has eliminated natural coastal protection such as coastal dunes, which increases the impact of maritime storms on coastal infrastructures and the population. Moreover, the reservoirs built in the 20th century have caused a reduction in the fluvial contributions to the sea, preventing longshore drift and the sediment accumulation on the coast, which contributes to the coastline regression. It has to be added the sea level rise, as it is causing an incredibly fast regression, compared to the other causes.
