The covid-19 pandemic can be described as a "black swan" that shakes from time to time the foundations of society as we understand them. Since the last days of 2019, the world population has experienced an event that has precedents, but which is currently manifesting itself with a series of very different characteristics than another past plagues.
Unlike those episodes, the covid-19 pandemic develops in a context of hypermobility. International globalized financial capitalism has consolidated itself at the beginning of the 21st century, and has resulted in an unprecedented increase in mobility. This mobility constitutes the very foundation of the globalization process, and the existence of continuous links and movements between continents, countries and cities explains the rapidity of the spread of the coronavirus. We can affirm that the pandemic does not arise because of hypermobility, but it is evident that the compulsive and extreme mobility of people worldwide accelerated the spread at a speed never seen and without precedent.
In Galicia (NW Spain) mobility restrictions were made based on different criteria. Here we will deal with showing the effectiveness of the different measures taken by national and regional governments, linked to mobility and the management of the pandemic. We will also focus on the analysis of its territorial peculiarities (administrative, socioeconomic structure, etc.) Thus, the main objective of this work is to verify the influence that mobility has had during the birth and development of this pandemic in a specific territory such as Galicia. To achieve this objective, in addition to the official reports from the competent authorities, we use detailed data on the number and address of those infected during the first wave. We have this magnificent information because we were selected by the Government of Galicia to carry out a study on the territorial behavior of the pandemic in Galicia.
