From the archive to the network: the interoperability with geohistorical sources

Technological advances related to data storage and management open new horizons to the Social Sciences. The arrival of all this support to research not only produces progress, but also raises inevitable challenges that must be addressed. Therein lays the purpose of this paper. The main objective is specifically aimed at resolving an issue that may become a problem which would hinder the progress achieved: that is, the interoperability of data. Each research group and each new work that is conducted does not have international interchange standards to help consolidate the results obtained. This is a fundamental matter, as it makes it possible to connect and produce even greater volumes of data. In addition, common rules would exponentially improve performance, minimizing information losses and enabling comparative studies to be performed. Data, both current and historical, and its interoperability are the petroleum of the 21st century. The IDEGEOHIS team has been working for a decade on the concept of building an international collaborative community from which standards could be developed in order to create a spatial data infrastructure (SDI) for geo-historical sources. Concretely, this proposal outlines several alternatives that can be followed and that are already introduced in other disciplines. For that purpose, we focus on two different but related ways. Firstly, starting from the semantic web, we will display an ontological design to unite associated themes; and secondly, following the weight that cadastral parcels have in the Inspire directive, we will use as a geo-reference of multiple variables.
Given the importance of the forum in which this work is inscribed, we seek to find the possibility of establishing working groups to advance the process. We have already started this procedure through the project financed by the Spanish government, in which we are currently working with Spanish, Portuguese, Mexican, Italian and Russian researchers.
