All societies include organizations of many types: cultural, political, religious, etc. Organizational theory recognizes that organizations will always try to improve efficiency and effectiveness. Furthermore, when an organization is officially recognized, it gains certain rights within the local society. Islamic civilizational system contains religious, social, cultural, economic and political aspects. In order to sustain these features in a non-Islamic country, Islamic organizations play an important role as the cultural glue and political fuel. We propose that measuring the growth of Islamic organizations can help to better understand their status in a given country. As an example, we present three country-based dynamic maps of Islamic organizations: the USA, Germany and Australia.
Our sources include only the official national registries of non-governmental organizations (NGO). Registries contain the name of the organization, registration number, address and date of registration. The time span ranges from the year of the earliest organization per country until 2020. The total cumulative sum (meaning, total organizations in 2020) are: 2,487 for Germany, 2,979 for the USA, and 290 for Australia.
The results show exponential growth that starts increasing in 1975 and accelerates during the last 20 to 30 years despite differences in the total cumulative sums. Maps of Islamic organizations over a span of time can help researchers, politicians and the general public to visualize and better understand their situation. This in turn will facilitate more informed decision making in the future. The digitalization of information and the freedom we experience in our modern world allows any researcher to obtain open and transparent information from reliable sources.
