Urban vitality and residential satisfaction, are areas of great interest within the field of urban studies. Urban vitality is a measure of the attractiveness and development of a city, and is commonly assessed using indicators of density, diversity of land uses and accessibility to equipment and services (Delclòs-Alió & Miralles-Guasch, 2018). Residential satisfaction is understood as the evaluation that residents make of their living environments based on their needs, expectations, and achievements. There is, however, no scientific evidence linking both concepts. Using survey and geospatial data from the Longitudinal Social Study of Chile (2019) and the JANE Index (Fuentes et al., 2020), this study examines which components of urban vitality can act as predictors of neighborhood satisfaction. It does so by regressing a set of self-reported satisfaction variables with specific elements of the neighborhood (such as safety, connectivity, green and recreational areas, cleanliness and beauty, proximity to the main activity and proximity to commercial areas), along with the 6 main components of urban vitality: Concentration, Diversity, Contact Opportunity, Need for Aged Buildings, Accessibility and Distance to Border Vacuums. Results show that most components of urban vitality, are significant predictors of neighborhood satisfaction. No all components of urban vitality however are positively associated with residential satisfaction though, as several attributes such as concentration and the availability of green areas are in fact negatively correlated. The conclusions show the importance of including subjective factors such as residential satisfaction in projects meant to transform the built environment in search of increased vitality, opening up further research questions.
