Recently there have been global changes both in educational technologies and trends, as well as in contemporary problems of urban geography.
The Concept of geographical education development in Russia refers to the problems of both content and methodological nature in teaching geographical disciplines in universities. In addition, the situation with COVID-19 became a powerful incentive to create an "educational online «airbag" in higher education.
The decision to create an educational product "Urban Geography (urban spatial metamorphosis)" didn’t arise by chance, and is associated with the need for quality academic education at the graduate level, including in the online environment. Urban spatial metamorphoses are an educational bilingual project for undergraduate geographers of Kazan Federal University, supported by the Vladimir Potanin Foundation in 2021.
The purpose of the educational project is to popularize and modernize the content of geographical education on the basis of the creation of a digital educational resource "Urban Geography" as part of the implementation of the Concept of Geographical Education Development in the Russian Federation.
The aim of the online course is to provide in-depth knowledge of the causes and forms of development of cities and urban agglomerations as well as to help students acquire a range of practical skills in urban studies.
Objectives of the project:
1. Modernization of the content of the online course taking into account new modern educational technologies;
2. To acquire not only "hard skills" (mapping, modeling skills, etc.), but also "soft skills" (time management, critical thinking, teamwork skills, conducting independent research).
The main idea of the project is to create a research geographical environment, which will allow young geographers to expand a range of economic-geographical and cartographic skills, including mastering the software "ArcGIS", GeoDa, R, QGIS.
