The equality “Society - Economy – Environment” (Brundtland report), now adjusted (Agenda 2030 UN) with the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) including all aspects that touch on the concept of sustainability, including other specific and critical parameters such as health, equality, energy poverty, quality of education, innovation, etc.
The 17 SDGs, 169 targets and 282 indicators set by the United Nations and adopted by the EU and its Member Countries, are an important opportunity for Municipalities, where through a proper methodological approach they can measure and evaluate their development program and at the same time to prioritize their projects - actions in relation to the degree of promotion of their transition to a more sustainable and climate neutral environment.
This paper presents in detail a new methodological approach for the utilization of SDGs indicators at the level of a Municipality in such a way that SDGs can be utilized as an innovative tool for planning and implementation of development programs of Municipalities, aiming at achieving Sustainable Development and Climate Neutrality. In the context of the analysis of this methodological approach, two island destinations of Greece with different spatial and development problems, such as the Municipality of Santorini and the Municipality of Mytilene (Lesvos), are taken as case studies.
Finally, its important to notice, that the whole methodology considers the last target of SDGs 17.9: By 2030, build on existing initiatives to develop measurements of progress on sustainable development that complement gross domestic product, and support statistical capacity-building in developing countries
