The transition to a service society resulted in the appearance of various development trajectories for rural areas. This transition means the emergence of significant problems that collectively can be described as a rural decline (Li et al., 2019). Smart development may be one of the solutions to the negative tendencies observed in rural areas. Smart rural development refers to activities that should enable rural residents to use technology and social resources to take effective actions for socio-economic development, taking into account local conditions and specifics. The smart approach is strongly rooted in the technological aspect - digital technologies, especially the Internet. The use of digital technologies enables the active use of human resources, both in the personal dimension and from the perspective of territorial units. Therefore, digital technologies should occupy a key place in all actions undertaken for spatial justice. The new long-term vision for the EU’s rural areas up to 2040 “Building the future of rural areas together” indicates as one of the four areas for action – “connected rural areas”; in the others, issues such as ''digital literacy”, “digital tools” are also present.
The aim of the presentation is to show the current state of knowledge on smart rural development with particular reference to digital technologies and spatial justice. We will also propose for discussion an approach to studying these phenomena on a local scale.
