The southwestern mountain region of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is characterized by a distinctive biological diversity, as it contains more than 60% of the content of biological diversity, about 50% of rare plants, and more than 50% of birds at the level of the Kingdom.
In view of the intensity of development activities associated with population growth and urban expansion, and the low level of environmental awareness, all of this resulted in a significant decline in the biological diversity content in the region under study.
As a result, the natural vegetation cover decreased, as the total area of ??vegetation cover in the region decreased from 4,385.6 km 2 in 1988, to about 350 km according to the satellite visual analysis for the year 2021.
The region witnessed a clear decline in the numbers of birds and wild animals, which were included in the Red List of Threatened Species.
