Human civilizations have faced disasters, many small and less destructive and some bigger and annihilating. The first global effort to put disaster risk reduction at the forefront was the International Framework for Action for the International Decade for Natural Disaster Reduction of 1989. After came the Yokohama Strategy for a Safer World: Guidelines for Natural Disaster Prevention, Preparedness and Mitigation and its Plan of Action in 1994, and the International Strategy for Disaster Reduction of 1999.
In 2005, the Hyogo Framework for Action (2005-2015) was adopted, and its successor is the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction (2015-2030). Sendai Framework has seven targets and four priorities for action. Its goal aims to prevent new and reduce existing disaster risk through the implementation of integrated and inclusive economic, structural, legal, social, health, cultural, educational, environmental, technological, political and institutional measures that prevent and reduce hazard exposure and vulnerability to disaster, increase preparedness for response and recovery, and thus strengthen resilience.
India being a vast country and the second-largest in terms of population is prone to disasters given its geological, geographical and locational characteristics. The country is affected by both natural and man-made disasters. The government is trying hard to create and deliver an efficient disaster preparedness mechanism. India is also a signatory to the Sendai framework for disaster risk reduction. This research paper is based on secondary data, mainly from the official documents of the Government of India and available literary sources. The present paper focuses on the analysis of progress made in the context of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction in India; it attempts to examine the challenges faced in the implementation of Disaster Risk Reduction initiatives and proposes suggestions to improve the strategies to accomplish the objectives.
