Following on from local experiments with contrasting results (the program “shared station” in Ile de France, or the call for projects “Open Station” in Nouvelle Aquitaine) and the development of services and businesses in metropolitan stations, which were transformed into multifunctional public places open to the city, SNCF Gares & Connexions has launched in June 2019 the “1001 Stations” operation in order to increase the value of the vacant areas due to the decline in rail traffic of small rural and urban stations. This national call for projects has many stakes, such as the enhancement of architectural and railway heritage, the development of local economy, the creation of innovative and useful activities in order to generate economic value and to revitalize the territory. The issue of my communication is to analyze this territorial integration with a focus on the projects based on commitments to environmental and social sustainability. My analysis uses various methods. First, a quantitative and cartographic analysis of the data available on the website “1001 stations” will allow us to draw up an inventory of the projects in relation to the specificities of the stations and the areas studied. Then, interviews with the stakeholders involved in the projects will facilitate understanding of the project management and the strategies they have adopted in a perspective of sustainable and solidary territorial development. Lastly, local case studies based on interviews of project leaders already established will be carried out to study how the projects participate in the territorial activity and the upgrading of stations in relation with the social, economic and environmental challenges of sustainable development. These case studies will focus specifically on activities promoting short supply-chain, social inclusion and sustainable transport in order to understand their choice of location and to access their local impacts.
