One of important aspects of social and political changes in the Mediterranean Region is the growth of the infrastructure of Islamic organizations. It is becoming an increasingly significant political factor with a potentially considerable impact on the future of communities. Temporal maps help researchers, politicians and general public to visualize and understand the situation better and therefore make informed decisions. Center for the Study of Political Islam International (CSPII) has initiated a project: Official Islamic Infrastructure Maps of the Mediterranean Region. The goal of the project is to develop the maps of Islamic organizations for a better understanding of the situation in the Mediterranean Region.
A reliable data source is the key for objective visualization. We use state registries of organizations - publicly accessible and transparent sources - which contain a name of organization, a registration number, an address and a date of registration. The maps are temporal, they show development of official Islamic infrastructure year by year. The stages of the project are as follows: we search through the list of Mediterranean countries, collect the data from official state registries, compile temporal maps of Islamic organizations in a given country, make a graph of growth of the number of Islamic organizations there, and finally share the results.
We have started our project with Spain. The source of data is an online-based Religious Entity Search System of the Ministry of the Presidency, Relations with the Courts and Democratic Memory of Spain Government. According to this registry 1805 Islamic organizations have been registered in Spain by 2020. We are glad to present maps of Islamic organizations in Spain, as well as the graph of their growth. We are proceeding with the project of Islamic Infrastructure Maps for other countries of the Mediterranean Region.
