The Government of Catalonia and CIMNE are creating the Piksel model/simulation-based GIS platform – to support decision making and predictive capacity of land management, especially relevant within the present climate emergency. GIS simulations and models are labor intensive to construct - opening the system to participation is key to ensuring new content and functionality. Interconnectivity among researchers and across disciplines is necessary in modern investigation - an online marketplace will facilitate this function, and is being developed at this time.
Marketplaces have become common on the internet - they enable diverse tasks to be performed and accessed in an easy and widespread manner. This ease and openness will be applied to model/simulation-based GIS assets on our platform. The system’s development includes such challenges as heterogeneity of technologies, heterogeneity of content sources, marketing and recognition, and requirements of simulations/models, such as data uploads, HPC connections and other necessities of GIS models and simulations.
The system is being developed with open source software, and will interact via APIs securely, offering high security. Users will acquire GIS assets, following a familiar ‘shop’ interaction. Users will also have the option to be content providers - an institution that creates GIS models will have the capability to provide theirs. New content submission will be controlled through the use of standard formats and validations. In a second phase of the project, users will be able to upload their data (such as shapefiles) and combine datasets for use in models and simulations. This will incorporate a workspace and the requirements for this functionality are being studied.
The creation of Piksel and its marketplace will occupy a unique area of the online GIS ecosystem, providing a collaborative space for the development and propagation of GIS models and simulations, a necessary function for development of such material.
