The producer service is a critical indicator of global city formation, and has been highlighted in urban development strategies. This paper examines the spatiotemporal dynamics and determinants of producer service firms in Shangahi, an emerging global city. We also develop a comprehensive analytical framework to examine the location determinants of producer services. The results manifest that the overall pattern of the producer service firms tends to disperse, but some producer service firms tend to concentrate in the sub-centers. Further regression analysis highlights Shanghai's role as a global city with emerging sub-centers where highly concentrated and diverse producer service firms locate. The underlying determinants of the spatiotemporal patterns of producer service firms are diverse. Accessibility to urban amenities such as universities and shopping centers helps accumulate high-quality human capital and contributes to the growth of producer service firms. Particular attention should be given to the heterogeneity of producer service firms in policy development and future studies.
