This paper study the spending and consumer behavior of second homeowners in Punta del Este. The aim is to make a comparison between this group and other visitors in Punta del Este, and on the other hand, to find different intra-group behaviors. This work has the objective to analyze expenditure in relative and absolute terms, i.e. to find and explain the differences between the level of expenditure on different ítems. The study is carried out in the main tourist destination during the summer season, Punta del Este. And is based on the Ministry of Tourism's inbound tourism survey for the years 2014 - 2019. Since our interest is to analyze the proportion of expenditure in each category, we are in the compositional data paradigm. Compositional analysis of expenditure data allows us to compare the proportion of expenditure on accommodation, food, transport, and other activities in the destination between owners and those who use other types of accommodation. The article investigates the application of two different methodologies for the analysis of compositional data on second home expenditure, the so-called log-ratio transformation (where the data are immersed in R^(d-1)) and the use of the Dirichlet distribution [Hijazi, (2009)] where the data are analyzed in the unit simplex. Then, the results are compared. The descriptive study shows that the pattern of the spending behavior of homeowners differs from that of other visitors. In view of the above, this type of study is necessary for the definition of tourism economic policies.
This study leaves future research open. On the one hand, it is necessary to think of a theoretical framework for second home tourism. Likewise, for second home destinations, it would be necessary to begin to implement a different accounting approach to allow us to understand second homeowner's behaviors after COVID 19. It would also be necessary to investigate the economic impact of this type of housing in terms of employment generation.
