We explore the changes in European air transport route networks between 2019 and 2022 using daily airline schedules and focus on the network changes among carriers operating jet aircraft. The study area is the European Common Aviation Area (ECAA), which represents the single European air transport market. The hierarchy of airlines and airports in 2019 are characterised and the airline route network structures are described in terms of standard network metrics. We trace the pattern of collapse and recovery during 2020 and 2022 and characterise the 2022 route networks. The key changes are presented for categories of airline (e.g. full-service carrier, low cost carrier, hybrid as well as large airline groups such as IAG) and for categories of airport (large, medium and small air transport communities). We outline the accessibility and mobility implications of the network changes for economic recovery and long-term air transport provision.
