Although spatial boundaries have profound impacts on interaction, there has been limited research on their impacts across national borders.
Movement across the Øresund Strait between Denmark and Sweden has increased strongly since the early 1990s but has been affected by several significant international changes: devaluation of the Swedish currency in September 1992; Sweden joining the European Union in 1995; the opening of the Øresund Bridge between Copenhagen and Malmo in June 2000; suspension of the Schengen open borders agreement and restrictions on travel during the 2015/16 European migration crisis and the Covid19 pandemic.
This on-going research focuses on examining the disruptive effects of the recent European migration crisis and 2020/21 Covid19 pandemic on movement between Sweden and Denmark, and particularly on cross-boundary commuting between Malmo and Copenhagen. The goal of this research is to improve understanding of the social distance created by international borders and to propose a border barrier component for cross boundary traffic forecasts.
