The adapted learning and passive acceptance of knowledge are still the dominant methods of work in schools in Serbia. Opposite to this, throughout Europe and in some parts of the world, a social model has been affirmed. That model emphasizes reciprocity, dialogue and various critical and creative methods of working with children, which may have positive implications in the inclusion process, At the same time, it may be beneficial for the integration of children with special needs and Roma children (to whom this research is dedicated) into the education system.
According to the 2011 census, there were registered 42,391 Roma people in the territory of AP Vojvodina (northern part of Serbia), where the largest percentage of Roma, over the age of 15, were persons with incomplete primary education (39.3%), followed by complete primary education (27.4%) and without education (22.9%).
The Covid-19 pandemic deepened already manifested exclusion of the Roma population, which was faced with new problems in the educational system. Namely, some of the problems are incapability of maintaining social contacts among peers, greater dropout of children from the educational system, lack of professional support in learning and technical impossibilities for distance learning.
The research conducted among primary school teachers will provide insight into the problems in establishing social contacts for lower grade students. The obtained results highlighted the problems in learning due to the transition to distance learning. One of the main problems in distance learning is a lack of basic conditions and tools for its implementation.
The results of the research provide the guidelines for the teachers. They also highlighted the importance of assistance for employees in education by finding solutions in a given situation for primary school students.
