This presentation focuses on the reorganization of temple culture in Kyoto and Nara, both of which are registered as World Cultural Heritage sites, and have been established as "traditional cultures" in Japan since the modern era. While attention is often focused on state-led policies, it will argue how customary tourism, especially school excursions, has played a significant role in the historic reorganization of both areas.
