This presentation calls for more interactions between geolocated and dislocated cartographies, between Euclidean and coordinates free maps, between conventional and alternative mapping practices. These interactions were made necessary by the challenges faced by mapping rich, complex and sometimes extremely difficult stories: the life stories of Rwandan exiles. On the one hand, mapping these stories using a geolocated mapping tool (i.e. Atlascine), made visible the geographic structures of these stories and emphasized places of importance as well as places of convergence between the 21 life stories mapped. On the other hand, the mobilization of sensibility mapping - a coordinates-free mapping method - offered the possibility of exploring in more depth these particular places and revealing more intimate aspects of these stories / places. While the strength of geolocated cartography (i.e. Atlascine) is to make visible the geographic structure of stories, the strength of sensibility mapping lies in its capacity to reveal the inner part of these stories. Throughout this presentation we illustrate the complementarity – as well as the limits - of both approaches to map not only what is said in the lines of these stories, but what is also hidden between these lines.
