Around the metropolitan area of Nantes (Nantes Métropole, Western France), regional journals has announced the establishment of a new Amazon distribution centre (up to 200 000 m²) successively in three different places: in Grandchamps-des-Fontaines (where it will finally be a Lidl distribution centre), then in Loroux-Bottereau (where the project is abandoned) and finally in Montbert (Southern outer-suburbia). In Montbert, the Amazon project meets strong opposition from environmental and trade union activists, but also from the elected officials of Nantes metropolis.
The paper focuses on the controversies arising with the (non-)development of these three industrial zones located at the gates of Nantes Métropole, but outside its planning perimeter. In the context of a political objective of zero net artificialisation, these development projects are increasingly contested. By doing so, it addresses the way oppositions against Amazon contribute to a broader politicization of the production of industrial lands in the outer-suburbia of metropolitan areas.
The adopted methodology is qualitative. It involves studying a body of literature on these industrial zones policies (local journals, public policy documents) and, above all, conducting semi-directive interviews with all the actors concerned: civil servants, elected officials, real estate developers, activists, Amazon managers
