We applied a quantitative approach. Through questionnaire surveys carried out on Moldovan migrants in Prague (Czechia – N=203) and Turin (Italy – N=206) in 2017/2018, and via following analyses of the data (regression analyses, a factor analsysis), light is shed on several aspects that reveal how social remittances work and what is their impact on migrants´ families and Moldova itself. Three issues are primarily tackled: Firstly, we examine the relationship between the social practice of migrant remitting and the transnational field connecting Moldova with Italy and Czechia. We distinguish two remitting practices: a) family remitting is organized around a set of routinized activities and communications that support the survival needs of families, while b) civil remitting contributes to the long-term development of civil society. Secondly, we elaborate on issues related to the question – who are the most important agents of change (while also testing the psychological determinants of individuals - namely, migrants’ human values and personality traits vis-à-vis social remitting). Thirdly, we analyze the function of interpersonal communication of migrants abroad (Moldovans in Prague and Turin) with their families, friends and acquaintances in Moldova and search for the connections to real social remittances.
Discussing all the results together, we try to enrich the knowledge in the given field. We believe that the concept of SR is promising and has developmental and modernization potential.
