Abstract
Waste management is a significant problem in the suburban areas of Sri Lanka. The issues of waste management have become a substantial problem in an urbanized area in the current context. Therefore, it is needed to find a proper waste management mechanism that has arisen today. The main objectives are to identify reasons to place solid waste in the study area and determine the environmental impact due to irregular waste dumping. The researcher has been selected Kelaniya DSD as a study site and there were 3,800 families living with consisting of 233,000 family members. On the other hand, there were several factories and religious places are located in the study area. Due to this situation daily 26 tons of solid waste accumulated in the study area. To overcome these solid waste management issues, Kelaniya Pradeshiya Sabha commences several activities. Dalugamgoda, Kelaniya, Hibutuwelgoda, and Mawella GNDs were selected as the sample area, and questionnaires, observations, and interviews were carried out to collect primary data. Especially, 100 families have been selected to gather primary data. Qualitative and quantitative analysis has been carried out to find the relationship between population growth and the generation of solid waste. Pearson's multiplied full and correlation index found that the difference between the variables was 0.96 and that there was a correlation between the population and the amount of waste generated. This has caused many problems for human health, environmental protection, and sustainable development. Therefore, it is an urgent need to consider the disposal of solid waste to the environment and find possible solutions to overcome this issue.
