The Ivorian ports of Abidjan and San Pedro are part of the development of containerisation on the West African coast. The port of Abidjan was officially opened to traffic in February 1951. The first container terminal was put into service in 1982. With a capacity of 1M TEUs, its throughput was 730,827 TEUs in 2019 compared to 157,276 TEU in 1982. The growth of the container traffic have led to the construction of a second terminal (TC2), with a capacity of 1,5 M TEUs. It is scheduled for delivery in 2022. In the port of San Pedro, containerisation was introduced in 1979, with a throughput of only 1,770 TEUs. The share of containerisation in the total traffic of the port was only 1.55%. In 2020 the throughput has raised to 219,368 TEUs with a containerisation rate of 55%. A project is underway to relocate and extend this terminal up to a capacity of 1 M TEUs with a cost of 260 billion CFAF. The project is conducted by Terminal Investment Limited, a subsidiary of the MSC Group. This research highlights the strategic role of container terminal development in the activities of Ivorian ports. The methodology is based on the state of the art and a survey among the various stakeholders. The result is that containerisation now plays a key role in the development of Ivorian ports.
